Title I

Whispering Winds is a Title I School, so what is a Title I School?

Title I is a federal assistance program for schools. The purpose of Title I is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education. Title I is designed to help students who are behind academically or at risk of falling behind. Funding is based on the number of low-income children in a school, generally those eligible for the free lunch program. Services may include, hiring teachers, tutoring, parent involvement activities, professional development, purchase of materials and supplies, and hiring teaching assistants among other things.

What is Parent Involvement?

Parent involvement means the participation of parents in regular, two-way, and meaningful communication involving student academic learning and other school activities. Many research studies show that children’s academic performance increases when parents become positively involved in their child’s education. Whispering Winds is requiring parent participation this year. Each family must volunteer 20 hours per year or 2 hours per month. Of course, we hope you will be actively involved daily in your child’s education.

High Qualified Teachers

Parents have the right to request information about the professional qualifications of the their child’s teacher(s) including the degrees held, certifications held, and whether the teacher is certified in the area he/she is teaching. Title I schools must notify parents if their child has been assigned, or has been taught for at least four consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet the “highly Qualified” definition. Parents may also request information concerning whether or not their child is receiving instruction by a teacher’s assistant/aide, and if so, his/her qualifications.

School Advisory Committee

The School Advisory Committee meets at least twice a year (Fall and Spring) to review the WWCS Parent Involvement Plan, School Improvement Plan, and School Compact, and other policies and procedures of Whispering Winds Charter School. All parents are invited to attend all meetings. If you wish to be a member of the SAC, please contact the school office and let us know. Meetings will be posted on our website, on our school sign and in the local newspaper.

Title I requires that parents be a part of the development of the Parent Involvement Plan, and all parents must have access to the plan.
